PROSE® treatment by BostonSight is a custom medical treatment that saves sight in individuals with ocular surface disease. For many people, PROSE treatment is their only option to restore vision and end suffering from critical and devastating eye issues.
How is PROSE different than a scleral lens?
Expertise and Co-Managed Care.
PROSE is a comprehensive medical treatment that includes cornea specialist ophthalmologists and optometrists who have completed an intensive BostonSight PROSE Clinical Fellowship. During treatment, doctors customize prosthetic devices out of gas-permeable polymers for each patient’s condition and unique eye shape. PROSE doctors work in partnership with your other medical providers to ensure your treatment manages your underlying condition.
What are PROSE Devices?
PROSE devices are removable transparent domes, about the size of a nickel, made of gas permeable plastic that allow oxygen to reach the surface of your eye. The devices rest on the sclera – the white part of your eye – and vault over the cornea to create a smooth surface over the distorted, damaged, or diseased cornea. They are filled with preservative-free saline each day at the time of application and are removed at bedtime.
PROSE treatment uses prosthetic devices cleared by the FDA for therapeutic indications.

My Sjogren’s Syndrome completely dried out my eyes. For years I suffered with symptoms. My sclera began to sag, so I was referred to the Boston Foundation for Sight to get PROSE lenses to protect my eyes. What a game changer! I wear my PROSE lenses comfortable for most of the day. My eyes are not only being protected but they are much more comfortable. My PROSE lenses also correct my vision allowing me to see without glasses. That’s a bonus!
I am so grateful for BostonSight. Prior to having PROSE, I had terrible sensitivity to light, blurred vision, etc. PROSE has given me my life back!
From 2000 through 2001 I had 6 surgeries to replace both eyelids on my right eye. There was little coverage for the cornea so the pain was constant and severe. A second opinion from Dr. Freitig at Mass Eye and Ear recommended looking into BostonSight PROSE. The first second I had a lens on my eye I knew this would help reduce pain. I have used PROSE for almost two years, and without it, I probably would not have been able to continue struggling against the cornea pain. I am extremely grateful to BostonSight as the savior of my life.
I was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome/TENs in May of 2022. After that month-long battle, my eyes are severely damaged and I no longer produce tears. This causes me to feel extreme light sensitivity, pain, hyper eye awareness, and blurred vision. It took around 2 months after leaving the hospital to get PROSE and they are the best thing that ever happened to me. My quality of life has improved beyond imagination.
